Walking and Picnicking
One of the best ways to enjoy the breathtaking beauty that is inherent to the Region of Epirus is to bring your lunch along with you on a leisurely walk, allowing you to enjoy nature's treasures up close and at your own pace.

Recommended Routes:
Although there are many magnificent routes to choose from, of particular beauty is the route from Metsovo to the monastery of St. Nicholas where tourists can learn about the rich cultural heritage of the region, while enjoying lamb prepared on a spit by the caretaker of the monastery, as part of a delicious picnic lunch.

En route from Metsovo to the Aoos Lake, visitors saunter along pathways overgrown with wild flowers and herbs with therapeutic qualities, eventually breaking for lunch on the banks of the crystal clear waters of the Aoos Lake.

Trek to Drakolimnes (lakes of the Dragon) on the summit of Mavrovouni (Black Mountain). Lightning - attracted to this particular area for some unknown reason - has sculpted a forest of trees into amazing shapes.

Anthohori, an exceptionally picturesque village in the region of Eastern Zagori. Here, streams of water from the snow melting off the mountains, have been channeled to run under houses emerging later in the central square to be sent off subsequently in different directions to provide water for neighboring communities.

 Hunting
With permission from local authorities, the avid hunter can try his luck at claiming a wildboar, hare, or rare species of bird for his trophy case.
Hunting in the region is limited to designated areas and animal species and is well organised, making it an enjoyable way to spend some days in the wilds of Epirus.
 Horse and Mule Guided Tours
Taking a ride on horse or mule-back through the traditional paths is the ideal way for a visitor to experience a day in the life of a villager carrying out his or her duties according to old-fashioned customs and traditions.

Ascent: 4 minutes by T-bar lift and 1 minute by palma lift
Useful Information: Restaurant and bar located on the premises. Equipment rental and lessons available.
Karakoli (1280 m-1700 m)
Access: Karakoli (1 km from Metsovo)
Runs: 1 for advanced skiers: 1200 m and 1 for beginners: 1800 m
Ascent: 7-8 minutes by chair lift (82 seats on the 1 km long chair lift)
Useful Information: Restaurant and bar located on the premises. Equipment rental and lessons available.
 Climbing
Terovo or Zita
Access: Terovo (80 km. from Metsovo)
Route: There are 20 routes ranging in level of difficulty from IV+ to VII+.
Useful Information: The height of this site is 80 m.
'Nuts and friends' are necessary for climbing these routes as minimal protection is offered by the permanent safety equipment (pegs and threaded slings) that exists on the routes.

Palaiohori Peristeri
Access: Peristeri (8 km. from Metsovo)
Route: There are 7 routes ranging in level of difficulty from VI+ to VIII+.
Useful Information: The routes span 80 - 100 m. 'Nuts and friends' are necessary. Permanent safety equipment (pegs and threaded slings) exists on belays and difficult routes.
The Society of Epirotic Hills
Access: Ioannina (65 km from Metsovo)
Route: There are 20 routes ranging in level of difficulty from IV+ to VII+.
Useful Information: 3 routes for top-roping.

Kastritsa
Access: Kastritsa (70 km from Metsovo)
Route: There are approximately 12 routes and 100 'problems' (passages).
Useful Information: There are 85 problems without rope, 15 routes (approximately 10 m) which require top-roping, and 12 small, bolted routes (10-20 m).

Metsovo
Access: Anilio (2 km from Metsovo)
Route: There are 12 routes ranging in level of difficulty from V+ to IX.
Useful Information: The routes are made up of cliffs (sandstone) of heights ranging from 15-35 m. All routes are equipped with bolts.

From Kalarites to Haliki Trikalon
Length of route: 150 km
Useful Information: From mid-June to September

Mitsikeli Tour
Access: Baldouma (25 km from Metsovo)
Route: Elati - Dikorfo - Kalouta - Kavalari - Miliotades - Baldouma
Length of route: 100 km
Useful Information: The route is long and offers a view of both sides of Mount Mitsikeli.
Distrato
Access: Konitsa ( 130 km from Metsovo)
Route: Konitsa-Distrato: 55 km, Distrato-Samarina: 19 km, Distrato-Vasilitsa: 15 km. Length of route: 15 - 80 km.
Useful Information: This beautiful route is situated at the foot of Mount Smolikas and borders the Aoos River valley.

Central and Eastern Zagori
Access: Skamneli (Giftokambo area) (120 km from Metsovo)
Route: Giftokambo-Laista: 14 km, Giftokambo-Vrisohori, Giftokambo -Vovousa: 30 km, Giftokambo-Makrino-Elatohori: 25 km. Length of route: 14 - 90 km.
Useful Information: This is the most beautiful area in Epirus for mountain biking excursions.
 Off-road Vehicle
Off-roading is a relatively new sport in Epirus and is especially popular with thrill-seekers hoping to achieve the ultimate rush offered by the very nature of this sport and the rugged terrain of Epirus.
Off-roaders have the additional advantage of bearing witness to the natural wonders of Epirus while tearing up the dirt trails.

Recommended Routes:
On the route from Metsovo-Haliki-Sirako-Kalarytes-Pramanta, off-roaders ascend to 2.100 m, and marvel at the waterfall above the village of Megalo Peristeri (210 km).
En route from Metsovo-Valia Calda-Samarina-Vovousa, off-roading skills are put to the test on the peaks of the mountain which form a horseshoe around the famous Valia Calda valley ( 150 km).
The route from Metsovo-Anthohori-Peristeri-Pramanta is also guaranteed to be suitable for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike (180 km).

The Kerasovitikos River

From Agia Paraskevi to Konitsa: 6 km
Level of Difficulty: III and IV
Best conditions: During the months of April and May.
The Voidomatis River
Access: A 30-40 minute walk from Vicos Village (75 km from Metsovo)
Route:
Voidomatis springs to Aristi-Papingo bridge: 3 km
Aristi-Papingo bridge to the old Klidonia bridge: 4 km
Level of Difficulty: III, I and II
Best conditions: From May until mid-July

The Acheron River
Access: Vrisoula (Preveza) (175 km. from Metsovo)

From the community of Vrisoula to the community of Gliki: 12 km
Level of Difficulty: III/IV and also I/II
Best conditions: April and May. The crossing to the mouth of the sea is difficult (approximately 20 km).

Best conditions: From April until the beginning of July.

The Kalaritikos River

The Community of Mazia

Useful Information: The take-off altitude is 500 m and 1000 m from the plain of Drossohori.
 Mountaineering
Athamanios (Arta)
Access: Athamanios (180 km from Metsovo)

Duration: 4-5 hours
Useful Information: End of May until mid June


Mount Lingos (2.177 m)
Access: Milia (15 km from Metsovo)
Starting point: The community of Milia
Duration: 6-7 hours
Useful Information: The peaks of the mountain form a horseshoe around the famous Valia Calda valley. The entire route is immersed in forest made up of forest-pine and black-pine.


Mount Smolikas (2.637 m)
Access: Pades of Konitsa (150 km from Metsovo)
Route: From the community of Pades
Duration: 6.5 hours
Useful Information: The best period is during the summer. The largest part of the route is situated in a forest which leads to the Lake 'Drakolimni'.


Mount Grammos (2.520 m)
Access: Plikati of Konitsa (175 km from Metsovo)
Starting point:
The community of Plikati.
The community of Aetomilitsa (Konitsa).
Duration: 4 to 6 hours (without snow).
Useful Information: The best period is during the summer.

Hill/Castle of Laskara
Access: Agios Thomas Preveza (175 km from Metsovo)
Starting point: From Pogonitsa Lake, one must climb Tourkovouni Hill to the Castle of Laskara.
Duration: 45 minute climb
Useful Information: The view from the Castle of Laskara (situated on Tourkovouni Hill, 1460 m) encompasses Arta, Vonitsa, Preveza, Lefkada, Amvrakikos. This route is suitable for beginners.
Peristeri (Metsovo)
Access: Anthohori (10 km from Metsovo)
Starting point: The community of Anthohori in Metsovo.
Duration: 5 hours
Useful Information: The route is situated in a valley surrounded by rocky peaks.

Gamila or Timphi
Access: Papingo (75 km from Metsovo)
Starting point:
The Zagori Village of Papingo.
The communities of Vradeto, Tsepelovo.
Skamneli (without snow) or Vrisohori (4-5 hours).
Duration: 2.5 to 7 hours depending of the route.
Useful Information: This mountain is considered one of the most magnificent mountains in Greece.

Mount Trapezitsa
Access: Pades of Konitsa (150 km from Metsovo)
Route: From the community of Pades
Duration: 2.5 hours
Useful Information: The view of the Aoos Gorge and the crest of Gamila from the summit is unforgettable.

Lekatsa Forest
Access: Mirsini of Preveza (175 km from Metsovo)
Starting point: From Mirsini there is a circular route which passes through the forest and leads back to the village
Duration: 3 to 5 hours
Useful Information: The Lekatsa forest is overgrown and rough, thereby serving as a natural refuge for wild animals. Access to the forest is facilitated by the condition of the circular route described above.

The Acheronta River Gorge
Access: Village of Serziana (Ioannina) (180 km from Metsovo)
Starting point: From Serziana (Ioannina) towards Gliki and Ammoudia (Preveza).
Duration: 10 hours
Useful Information: The route is difficult and appropriate only for those with mountaineering experience. The gorge was crossed for the first time in 1994 (24/7) by the mountaineering team of the National Mountaineering Association (Preveza) lead by H. Gouva.
 Cross-country Skiing

A challenging trail of 3,5 km which dipsand winds through the forest.

Useful Information: For those seeking an exhilarating outdoor experience this trail is one of the best cross-country skiing routes in Europe.
