Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza, inspirer and the driving force of Metsovo's today economic vigour, was a politician, intellectual and literary man and an eminent figure in the affairs of modern Greece. A man with many talents and diverse interests, he engaged in a number of social and economic activities of public benefit, which contributed to the development of his beloved hometown Metsovo.

His acquaintance and warm friendship with the Baron Michael Tossizza, who also came from Metsovo but lived abroad, led to the creation of a Foundation bearing the Tossizza’s name. The Tossizza foundation was established in the late 40s and Averoff, as driving force of the Foundation, supervised the implementation of many works that contributed to the preservation of tradition and boosted the economic development of the community.

Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza had dreamed of creating a high quality museum of modern Art in his hometown, which is why he collected more than 200 paintings and sculptures. Towards the end of his life he created the Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza Foundation which he endowed with his significant collection of Greek paintings of the 19th and 20th century. The collection is housed in the modern three-storey building of the Averoff Art Gallery, which was built in accordance with the traditional style of the area, since the preservation of the traditional architecture was one of the aims permeating all of the works implemented in Metsovo.
